Paying for Therapy

I no longer bill any insurance companies directly for therapy services or participate as an in-network provider on any insurance panels.  What that means is that clients pay for therapy at the time of the session.  I accept cash, checks, credit/debit cards, and FSA (Flexible Spending Account) cards and HSA (Health Savings Account) cards.    Many clients seek partial reimbursement from their insurance companies for the cost of therapy, and I am happy to provide them with the detailed receipt necessary to support that process.  If you are interested in finding out if you can get reimbursed for some of the cost of therapy with me, you should contact your health insurance company directly to ask what level of coverage might be offered for out-of-network outpatient mental health benefits.  Please note that most insurances will not reimburse for the full fee, and many HMOs do not have out-of-network benefits.  It is important that you are aware that if you choose to work with a therapist who is in-network with your insurance, you will most likely pay much less than if you see a therapist  who is out-of-network, or opt to not involve you health insurance at all.  Not using your insurance has some benefits, such as keeping information about you and your therapy private, and not having the length and frequency of therapy dictated by a third party (your insurance).  However, paying out of pocket for therapy does not work for everyone, and it's important to consider and choose what is right for you.

Rates
Individual Therapy Session: $175
We begin with an Individual Intake Appointment, which lasts 65-70 minutes.  At the intake, we will
focus on gathering information, gaining an understanding of what the issues are, and hearing what you are hoping to get out of therapy.  During this session, we can get a sense of whether I'm the right therapist for you, discuss some of the parameters and details of the therapy process, and I can give you my initial assessment of what I believe would be most helpful to you at this time. If at the end of an initial appointment, I determine that a referral to another provider would be more appropriate, we can discuss it at that time.  You will be asked to complete Intake paperwork (Consent forms, psychosocial history, etc)  through my online portal prior to your first appointment.

Follow-up Individual therapy sessions are 55 minutes in duration.  The frequency of individual therapy varies depending on the issues that you might be working on, how long we've been working on them, and your availability.  Initially, most people attend therapy one time per week.  Some people may later choose to come less often- 2 or 3 times a month.

Cancellation Policy

If you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment, please provide me with at least 24 hours notice.   If you cancel on the day of your appointment or do not show for your appointment, you will be charged for the full cost of the appointment.  This is not intended to be punitive- it does, however, allow me to keep you as an active client in my practice.

Couples Therapy Sessions $300 (typical 12 week course of therapy is $2430)
I typically begin couples work with a plan to work with the couple for 12 weeks (this includes 9 appointments- 7 sessions together and 1 session each with each partner alone).   We begin with the initial intake process, which involves a first session with both members of the couple, followed the next week (ideally) by an individual appointment for each partner (the individual appointments are $165 each and last 55-60  minutes).  The next week, we will come back together for a couples session, and then we will meet every two weeks for the remainder of the 12 weeks.  At the end of the 12 weeks we can decide together whether you'd like to continue to work on issues either every other week or every month, or whether it makes sense to end the course of therapy at that point.

The first session focuses on gathering information and gaining an understanding of what the issues are.  During this session, we can get a sense of whether I'm the right therapist for you,  and discuss some of the parameters and details of the therapy process.  I can give you my initial assessment of what I believe would be most helpful to you at this time. If at the end of an initial appointment, I determine that a referral to another provider would be more appropriate, or if you are not sure I'm the right therapist for you, we can discuss it at that time.  You will be asked to complete Intake paperwork (Consent forms, psychosocial history, etc)  through my online portal prior to your first appointment.

The Cancellation policy for couples is the same as for individuals:  If you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment, please provide me with at least 24 hours notice.   If you cancel on the day of your appointment or do not show for your appointment, you will be charged for the full cost of the appointment.  This is not intended to be punitive- it does, however, allow me to keep you as an active client in my practice.

Telehealth Sessions

Telehealth sessions (online sessions using HIPPA-compliant technology) are available for both individual and couples sessions.  The cost and duration are the same as for in-person sessions.  You may begin your therapy using one kind of session and then find there are times that you may want to schedule the other.  This is always an option, but please give me a few hours notice.  Please note, that due to issues with licensure portability state to state, you must be in Massachusetts when a telehealth session is being conducted.
